I’m sure you all have heard about the upcoming changes to Splash Mountain due to the backlash from social media. But it likely won’t end there. Currently there’s a rumored list of attractions that are being “audited” to determine if they need to be changed due to “sensitivity issues.”
Here are the ones being mentioned:
The Jungle Cruise
The Jungle Cruise is of course being mentioned due to the representation of natives as “headhunters” and “savages.”
Enchanted Tiki Room
Apparently they are mad at the Tiki room for “ethnic stereotyping” of various characters.
Peter Pan’s Flight
This one is because they want the Native American scene removed due to “stereotyping.”
Hall of Presidents
Due to racial stereotypes and some of the presidents being slave owners. A lot of those same presidents appear on our money, but Disney doesn’t have issues accepting that.
Country Bear Jamboree
This one was rumored to be removed at some point anyways. But apparently it’s being looked at for issues.
Carousel of Progress
This one is even rumored to go seasonal and then be removed. Personally, I think Disney has been looking for a way to take it out even though it’s a classic. This just gives them an excuse.
Why is it bad? Who knows.
It’s a Small World
Even though the message of the attraction is unity and acceptance, it’s bad so it needs to be changed now. Mostly for stereotyping. Like the Carousel of Progress it’s a relic of it’s time and it’s beloved.
American Adventure
Apparently it’s an issue with the hosts as Benjamin Franklin was a slave owner Mark Twain wrote questionable things.
They have previously added more and more diversity to the film. That attraction does make a point of talking about racism and sexism and how it wasn’t right. But it’s up for modification now.
The Haunted Mansion
There are a couple of complaints on this one. First the Disneyland version looks like a plantation mansion. Secondly they have the hanging scene in the stretching room. Finally, there aren’t enough diversity with the ghosts. I would think that last one, especially in a plantation setting, could be even more problematic.
Hoop de Doo Review
For some reason. I’m really not sure what it is.
Of course it’s all rumor, but allegedly there is a committee that will be looking into auditing these attractions, and probably others, to find “issues” and fix them.
At this point only Splash Mountain changes are the only ones announced.
