Marvel’s ‘The Eternals’ Trailer Allegedly Breaks Records for Pandemic Era Disney-Marvel Trailers

According to the media, Marvel’s “The Eternals” trailer had over 77 million views, globally, in 24 hours, making it the most popular “pandemic-era” movie trailer for Disney.

That’s right folks, it’s the most popular trailer in a time when movies weren’t being released theatrically, and many films were pushed back (including this one) and that’s what they’re running with.

According to Deadline, in an exclusive, that came from “social analytics sources.”

… Marvel Cinematic Universe’s third Phase 4 movie Eternals drew an almighty 77 million global viewers in its first 24 hours since dropping Monday, per social analytics sources. That’s the biggest online trailer drop for a Disney-Marvel movie in the 14 months of the pandemic. It’s a great sign for a film that is scheduled to open in theaters  November 5.

What’s strange is that if you go to the actual YouTube video it doesn’t show those numbers. It’s showing 16.8 million views, since it’s launch. They don’t specify where and what the numbers are based on–just “social analytics sources” say.  So I can’t confirm it.

How does it compare?

After claiming it did the “best” during the “pandemic” their other big bragging point is that it did better than ‘Cruella’ at 71 Million.

Then they spend the article comparing it to other Disney films, not pandemic era, that it beat like “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” at 61.7 million in 24 hours. That film ended up being a flop.

If you compare it “apples to apples” against other Marvel trailers, it falls short.

Meanwhile the “Black Widow” trailer, that debuted shortly before the pandemic on February 2, 2020, did 116.4 million in the same time frame.

If we are being fair “The Eternals” trailer got a very lukewarm reception, overall, with a lot of people confused as to what they were watching.

Yes many people may have watched it, but that doesn’t translate to interest or excitement.

Then there’s the issue that the film has had numerous reshoots, even as of February 2021.  Reportedly test screenings leaked major plot points all over the internet as well.

It’s possible the film could end up being good, but articles promoting by saying it’s the “most viewed, but only if you put all these parameters in, does not help it in the way Disney and Marvel likely expect.

It’s going to play out how it plays out. This movie was likely never going to be one that fans were clamoring for as many don’t know the characters yet. Just throwing big Hollywood names into the film doesn’t bring it like it used to.

People aren’t invested in the characters enough to allow it to beat out trailers for ‘The Avengers’ or ‘Black Widow’ or ‘Spider-Man.’  Even Falcon and the Winter Soldier, a Disney+ show, beat ‘The Eternals’ trailer at 125 Million views, according to the article.

It’s too early to tell how this film is actually going to perform, but when you take in a bunch of factors, it seems these articles are popping up as an attempt to boost ‘The Eternals.’  If it was so popular, why would they need to?

Maybe it will do well. Maybe it’s really good. But it’s too soon to tell.
We can find out when it comes to theaters on November 5, 2021.
