File this one under rumor. We all know that Universal Japan and the Universal parks in Florida and California are getting some variation of Super Mario World. Universal Japan announced today that they are opening their Super Mario World on February 4, 2021. Mario is definitely something Disney should worry about. He’s up there with Mickey Mouse as one of the most beloved and identifiable characters. But if one rumor is true, Disney may have something else to be much more worried about—Pokemon.

There has been rumors recently about Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe possibly getting the rights to use Pokemon in their expansion, if and when they can build it. That is the one Disney should really worry about.

Why would Disney worry about Pokemon?

Pokemon is the number one, “highest grossing, media franchises of all time,” according to an article in Visual Capitalist.

Disney owns four of the top ten, and eight of the top 25, but Universal already has the use of 3 of the top 10 with Hello Kitty, Mario and Harry Potter, and if they get Pokemon they will have the number one, highest grossing, media franchise.

Harry Potter is already a huge draw for Universal against Disney, Mario will definitely expand that, but if Pokemon comes in too, it’s really going to put a dent into Disney’s theme park lead.

Of course this is all rumor, but I’ve heard from several different sources that it is something that has been discussed.

Personally, I really hope they do get Pokemon simply because it would be a lot of fun to see it get the theme park treatment here in America. I also would love to see some of the popular anime-inspired attractions they have in Japan come over here as well. But I know that likely won’t happen.
