Mafex’s Boba Fett Figures Nail The Changing Details Between Movies

Bandai is re-releasing two of the Mafex Star Wars figures next year. According to the Big Bad Toy Store, Boba Fett, as he appeared in The Empire Strikes BackĀ and Return of the Jedi, will be hitting shelves in April for $74.99 apiece.

Both Fetts stand at 6.25″ tall and feature articulated bodies and various interchangeable parts. Think of them as far superior versions of the Black Series figures.

Although much of the outfit is the same, the paint applications and smaller accessories make these distinctly different. For example, Fett’s ESB jetpack is nearly one color, while the RoTJ pack sports a royal blue and orange paint scheme. The bounty hunter’s forearm weapons also stand out more with red/maroon paint.

Personally, I favor the Jedi armor more. A lot of the detail is lost with the uniform olive color used in Empire. It certainly fits the film’s bleak tone, but the more Boba’s armor pops on screen, the more imposing he looks.

I wonder if Book of Boba Fett will expand on where he scored the two Wookie braids from that are trapped over his right shoulder? Unfortunately, since all the Expanded Universe lore was dumped by Disney, we have a blank slate for Fett’s teenage and adult years after Clone Wars and before Empire.Ā

Hell, his origins changed drastically when George Lucas included him as an integral part of the clone army. Before that, some stories alluded to him being a former stormtrooper who killed his commanding officer. At least there is one constant between Legends and the Disney canon: Boba Fett escaped the Sarlacc pit.

Even with the differences between these two figures, there are even more when looking at older versions of these same Bandai toys. Around five years ago, both Fetts were released, and Toy Galaxy did a breakdown. Looking at the color schemes, the ones up for pre-order vary even further.

Which version of Fett’s armor is your favorite? What do you think of the changes for the upcoming Book of Boba Fett series? Let us know in the comments below.
