Lucy Lawless Responds To Fan Campaign To Replace Gina Carano

When Gina Carano was unceremoniously “Let Go” from The Mandalorian by Kathleen Kennedy it was quite the blow against the fandom. Gina’s Cara Dune character was seen as a strong woman warrior who kicked butt without being overpowered and didn’t need to put men down in order to stand out–which is what a strong female character should be. Recently it appears that a campaign made by some hardcore fans to have Cara Dube be played by actress Lucy Lawless going forward.

The New Zealand born actress is perhaps best known for portraying a similar character,  in a fantasy setting, Xena from the Xena: Warrior Princess Television series. That series was a spin-off of the similar series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys show.

The series followed the titular heroine Xena, an Amazon warrior in Ancient Greece battling various monsters and immortal beings, even teaming up with Hercules, played by Kevin Sorbo, from time to time.

The campaign says that Lucy Lawless would fit the role due to the similarities of the two characters and some physical similarities between the two actresses. Though Lucy Lawless was 27 when she played Xena and is currently 53, and that Gina is 14 years younger than her at age 39.

When asked about the fan campaign Lucy Lawless said:

“It might have hurt me in some way, because then they couldn’t hire me because it would seem to be pandering to… I’m just guessing here, I don’t know anything, but in some ways, it can be unhelpful, because if they pander to this fan group, then how are you going to pander to every other fan group, do you know what I mean?”

Apparently when the campaign gained some attention the actress was already in talks with Lucasfilm for a role, but not as Cara Dune, but a completely different role. She believes this campaign hurt her chances of getting that role. She also expressed displeasure when it comes to pandering to fans. It is unknown how severe her dislike for fan pandering is, but she seemingly doesn’t like it at all.

Though Lucy Lawless definitely won’t play Cara Dune, it is still unknown if anyone else will portray the iconic character. Not to mention the numerous rumors that Gina is in talks to return to the role thanks to Jon Favreau. We will have to wait and see it these rumors are true.

What do you think? Do you think Lucy Lawless would be a good Cara Dune? Or would you prefer Gina Carano return?
