Loki Sets Record for Disney+ Marvel Debut, Still Falls Behind The Mandalorian Season 2 Premier

Marvel’s Loki has debuted with the biggest launch of any of the Marvel shows on Disney+ according to Samba TV. However, it didn’t beat Star Wars: The Mandalorian season 2.

Samba TV is a third party service that tracks the progress of various streaming shows and calculates viewership numbers.

Based on their data Loki started out strong with 890K views on it’s debut day.  This is up from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier which opened at 759k and WandaVision at 655k.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier did see some declines in viewership as the series progressed. Loki may also see that as a lot of people enjoyed the first episode, while many did not.

So far Marvel has yet to beat out Star Wars with The Mandalorian season 2 debuting at 1.04 million households.

However, Marvel show premier numbers are increasing from show to show at over 100k with each new offering. But Loki was one that a lot of fans were really looking forward to.  Other upcoming shows like Hawkeye (2021), Ms. Marvel (2021), She-Hulk (2021) and Moon Knight (2021) don’t seem to have the same level of fan demand that the other shows did.

I actually would not be surprised to see the numbers decline with other premiers. Other than Hawkeye, most of the characters aren’t ones that general audiences are familiar with.

Meanwhile Star Wars is bring shows like The Book of Boba Fett, Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Mandalorian Season 3.  Overall I think some of them could outperform the upcoming Marvel shows. If for no other reason it could come down to character and name recognition.

Time will tell.  I do look forward to seeing if Loki’s numbers will stay up or if they will see drops in subsequent weeks as other shows did. Loki did seem to have a lot more fan buzz and anticipation than the other two.

We shall watch and see what happens.
