The upcoming The Black Widow is a prequel film set before Avengers: Endgame since * spoilers * Black Widow sacrifices herself and dies pretty much forever as her soul is exchanged for the Soul Stone.
The Film has been in development for quite some time and was primarily greenlit because of how much fan support the character had in the community.
With Avengers: Endgame being the big Finale to the 11 year story arc for the Marvel Cinematic Universe a number of our part heroes have now left, making way for the next wave of heroes for the universe.
Sure we will, from time to time, see small appearances from certain characters, but we’ve been led to not expect to see another Steve Rogers Captain America or Tony Stark Iron Man film in this version of the universe. Or so it might seem.
In a recent Press Conference for the Black Widow Film, Marvel Studios Head Kevin Feige stated:
“Certainly this film and this story is a particular case for for Natasha, But the notion of exploring the past, present, and future of the MCU is certainly in the cards for all of our characters. This particular story of this particular cast is very personal, very specific to Natasha.“
This statement gave some fans hope for possibly seeing the return of fan favorite characters who we all thought were gone, and perhaps introduce new Marvel characters into the universe.
Storylines that could have taken place in between films could possibly be fleshed out, but this all of course depends on how well The Black Widow film preforms. If the film does well Marvel may indeed go forward on the prequel/midquel concept, but if the film underperforms it is safe to assume that studio heads will question the concept of past stories and focus on going forward.
What prequel or midquel would you like to see? Who would you want to see return?
