Jungle Cruise Attraction To Receive Some Story Changes

The Disney Parks blog has announced that they will be “enhancing” the classic Jungle Cruise attraction at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland “to include new adventures that stay true to the experience we know and love – more humor, wildlife and skipper heart – and also reflect and value the diversity of the world around us.”

So basically the rumor that there were a list of attractions to be changed because of “diversity” is true. Which isn’t always a bad thing, when done correctly.

Disney got Imagineer writer and former Jungle Cruise skipper, Kevin Lively to tell everyone that he is working on re-writing the classic attraction:

As part of the story update, we’ll get to follow a skipper and his passengers as their journey goes awry. That’s right, for the first time ever, the skipper role will not only be that of a live, experienced and witty guide, but also represented by a show figure within the attraction itself. It fact, the expedition will be up a tree (Literally!) after their sunken boat splits apart and chimps board the wreckage, with monkey business ensuing.

But that’s not even half of the hull story. Fans of the Jungle Cruise attraction may recall some boast that used to make their way around the river but haven’t been seen for a while–specifically the Mekong Maiden and the Kwango Kate. Ever wonder what happened to them? Well, you might go ape when you find out! Ultimately, the jungle gets the last laugh.”

Now it really does seem like they are making changes that address some “issues” but keep it fun and spirited like it always has been.  My husband and I are taking bets that the changes tie into the upcoming movie was well, because that’s totally something Disney would do.

This does give support to the rumors that attractions will be changed due to “diversity.” Some of the ones on the list that we know of are: Peter Pan’s Flight, The American Adventure, Country Bear Jamboree, It’s a Small World, The Hall of Presidents and more.

Sometime I agree that changes should be made, but then sometimes they don’t need to be changed, like the auction scene in Pirates of the Caribbean.  However, if it can be changed in a way to enhance and not take away I’m for it. The change in the Pirates attraction isn’t terrible, my husband still hates it, but it isn’t that bad.

Here are some of the concept art pieces:

It seems they have taken the men on the pole and added a Skipper, race diversity and some women too.

What they aren’t mentioning, but I think is likely –Trader Sam will disappear or be changed significantly.

Here’s what the Imagineers attached to the project said:

Carmen Smith-Executive Creative Development & Inclusion Strategies
As Imagineers, it is our responsibility to ensure experiences we create and stories we share reflect the voices and perspectives of the world around us. With Jungle Cruise, we’re bringing to life more of what people love- the humor and wit of our incredible skippers, while making needed updates.

Chris Beatty, Creative Executive

When we consider making changes to a classic attraction, we focus on ways to ‘plus’ the experience. The skippers of the Jungle Cruise bring humor to guests of all ages, and we’re excited to be adding to that legacy–along with a new animated skipper figure–by celebrating their adventures and influence.

Kim Irvine, Executive Creative Director

The Jungle Cruise has changed course many times over the years– always with the idea that the adventures along the river change from day-to-day. I’m fortunate to be part of the Jungle Cruise team that is carrying forward a Disney tradition of change and enhancement that was encouraged by Walt Disney.

To further push the story that everyone will love it, Disney posted the Skipper reactions on Instagram:

Come on. They aren’t going to say “This sucks” or “I don’t like the ideas” to their bosses while on camera.

Just like when as Disney media, they watch over your shoulder to make sure you only post the right hashtags and comments.

Or when you “interview” someone you have to choose from the approved questions they give you.

But I digress.

I don’t think the ideas shown are bad changes at all! But I also know that we are only seeing some of what they want us to for now. I think we are going to see many more changes, and some that people might not like.

As long as it’s mostly the same and feels the same and isn’t about pushing narratives. I’m okay with it.

What do you think? Comment and let us know.
