The Will Smith “Slap” incident at the 2022 Academy Awards will be one of the most controversial moments in award show history. Wether it was staged or not the internet seems to be mostly condoning Will Smith’s actions as he physically assaulted comedian Chris Rock over a joke.

Actor Jim Carrey expressed his disgust over the while incident in an interview on CBS Mornings while promoting the upcoming film Sonic the Hedgehog 2. He stated:

I was sickened. I was sickened by the standing ovation. I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse. It really felt like this is a really clear indication that we’re not the cool club anymore

Jim Carrey also said what he would have done in Chris’ shoes had he been slapped.

I think I would have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 Million. Because that video is gonna be there forever. It’s gonna be ubiquitous. That insult is gonna last a very long time.

If you wanna yell from the audience and disapprove or show disapproval or say something on Twitter you do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they just said words.

He also disagreed with the claim that the smack was due to escalation between Will and Chris:

It didn’t escalate. It came out of nowhere because Will has something going on inside him that’s frustrated. I wish him the best, I really do. I don’t have anything against Will Smith. He’s done great things. But that was not a good moment.

After this interview “Jim Carrey” was trending online with people showing their support for what he said.

Will Smith is supposedly “under investigation” by the Academy. He most likely won’t have his award taken away, even though he should. But he probably won’t be making any public appearances any time soon as he has gone radio silent to avoid the backlash his actions have caused.

It just goes to show you, you can be on top of the world one moment, then one dumb decision later you fall to the deepest crevice.
