Is The Marvel vs. Capcom Series Ever Coming Back?

The recent announcement from Arcade1Up that they were re-releasing the classic arcade game Marvel vs. Capcom 2 people were extremely excited. The last time the game was publicly available to purchase was on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 digital stores. But when Marvel and Capcom went their separate ways it was de-listed.

Now with this arcade cabinet jam packed with eight classic games some people have been wondering if that means we will see the series get another installment. The last time there was a Marvel vs. Capcom game was in 2017 with Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. The game underperformed in sales due to lack of fan favorite characters and competition from Dragon Ball FighterZ.

Well it looks like such a partnership may not happen again, or at least for a long time.

Recently Game Informer were able to do a short video with Arcade1Up Producer John D. John had previously been a producer at Capcom and was one of the people responsible for getting games like Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite off the ground. But after the failure of MvCI and other games like Street Fighter V Capcom’s fighting game branch was downsized, with John heading elsewhere.

In the interview John says something interesting that made many fans very worried:

Once the FreeMvC2 campaign started gaining momentum it did get the attention of Capcom and Marvel, so we were lucky enough to bring both parties together to re-release this one last time.

This somewhat implies that the relationship between Marvel and Capcom isn’t as stable as it once was. The failure of MvCI was a huge disaster for both companies. So much so that neither company may want to make a new entry in the long running fighting game series.

Hopefully this will be the ‘last time’ for now and not forever. Many fans still crave a Marvel vs. Capcom 4.
