Is Disney Putting a Food Kiosk Marketplace Inside the American Adventure Rotunda?

When I think of EPCOT’s World Showcase I think of historical and cultural learning, respect and appreciation. The countries circle the World Showcase Lagoon with the American Adventure in the center of it all. Inside it always felt dignified and meant to honor America. (OP-Ed)

When you enter The American Adventure there is a rotunda, with some kind of exhibit.

Be it the large paintings representing the “Spirits of America” or the new “The Soul of Jazz: An American Adventure.”

During the holidays they usually have an elaborate ginger bread house representing the capital.

To the right hand side is a small museum called “The American Heritage Gallery” with rotating exhibits honoring various heritages and cultures that make up America.

What they don’t have is a busy Kiosk selling quick service or snacked sized items. But that might change.

If you read the menu for the upcoming EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival it lists one of their “NEW Marketplaces” as “NEW! The Rotunda Bistro (American Adventure Rotunda)”

Maybe I’m reading it incorrectly, but other locations has their exact spot in parenthesis too so I’m assuming that they are actually putting the kiosk INSIDE the Rotunda of a building meant to invoke honor, patriotism and respect.

Someone thought “Let’s put a food kiosk in there!”

Not to mention it’s meant to be acoustic so it’s going to be extra loud.

If that is what they are doing and it isn’t just worded poorly, why not just start putting kiosks in all the important cultural buildings around the World Showcase?

You can fit them in the Stave Church in Norway,  The Temple of Heaven in China, The museum area in Japan. Why not stick one in the Gallery of Arts and History in the Morocco pavilion?

I get that they rent it out for events and weddings, like other areas of the parks, but this just seems so tacky. It isn’t an expensive, limited event, it’s a food cart! Have you seen the mess people make around the food carts and tables?

It seems that in an effort to offset the tackiness they are having “higher end” offerings in the area.

  • Wild Mushroom and Truffle Tart with Gruyère and Crème Fraîche (new)
  • Chilled Crab and Avocado Parfait with Caviar (gluten/wheat friendly; new)

  • Domaine Carneros Cuvée Brut Rosé, California (new)

What? No hot dogs, hamburgers, fried chicken and apple pie?

In case you’re wondering. They still have Hops & Barley outside. So there is no reason to even do this.

Maybe I’m being overly emotional about it because after all it’s “just a theme park building,” but it’s the centerpiece of the World Showcase and it’s been a spot of remembrance, pride and patriotism for years. It is possible that is NOT what they are doing and it was worded strangely.  Maybe it is meant to say outside the American Adventure Rotunda?

If true, it feels wrong and disrespectful somehow.

Disney what are you doing?
