Gov. DeSantis Says Disney World “Safe” as Florida Coronavirus Cases Skyrocket

With many people questioning whether or not its wise for Florida’s theme parks to reopen as COVID-19 cases skyrocket in the Sunshine State, Governor DeSantis says that Universal Orlando, at least, is doing a “great job” and that he believes Walt Disney World is “safe” to reopen.

By contrast, Miami will be shutting down restaurants and gyms again due to the rapid increase in coronavirus cases. Florida has added almost 60,000 new cases in the past week alone, and there seems to some correlation between using your credit card at dining locations and virus transmission, according to CNBC.

Some states, including Pennsylvania, have issued a quarantine recommendation for anyone visiting the state of Florida and other COVID “hot spots.”

According to Gov. DeSantis, though, he still believes Disney will be safe.

Here’s what he said at UF Health The Villages Monday…

“Disney, I have no doubt it’s going to be a safe environment,” DeSantis said. “The folks who put a premium on safety, that’s showing you that, you know, we’re able to handle this, have society function still when people go into work, but do it in a way that you take some basic precautions and so we’re really impressed with what Universal has done, and I’ve looked at Disney’s plan … it’s very very thorough.”

DeSantis claimed many of the cases were younger people.

“For the people that are testing positive at the highest rates in Florida, those 20-year-olds and the 30-year-olds, by and large, they’re presenting very mild or asymptomatically and that’s obviously a good thing,” he said.

Beyond the health concerns, Coronavirus has been a very polarizing political issue and how states deal with reopening seems to depend largely on whether the Governor is a Democrat or a Republican. Republican led states, like Florida and Texas, are pushing hard for reopening, whereas states like New York and California have instituted much stricter stay-at-home orders.

Disneyland in California has pushed back its reopening plans.

Theme park guests hail from all over the country and all over the political spectrum. How many feel about traveling to theme parks located in a State surging with new COVID cases remains to be seen, even if for no other reason than being forced to wear a mask in the Florida heat.

Will “Disney Magic” be enough to wash away some of the bleakness of 2020? Time will tell.
