Gina Carano Twitter Battle: #WeLoveCaraDune and #FireGinaCarano Trend Over Controversial ‘Star Wars’ Actress

Gina Carano is trending on Twitter once again. Carano, who plays Cara Dune on The Mandalorian, has unwittingly become the next battleground in the increasingly polarized Star Wars fandom.

Why is Gina Carano trending so much on Twitter these days? It’s because of her conservative-leaning political opinions, which are seemingly taboo in Hollywood and on most social media platforms.

Of course, for every attempt to ‘cancel’ her there is an equal and opposite attempt to save her from getting fired. There are just as many Star Wars fans who show strong public support for the actress, if not more.

Yesterday, passionate fans on both sides took to Twitter with the hashtags #FireGinaCarano and #WeLoveCaraDune.

According to Forbes, the #FireGinaCarano hashtag came about after post by the official Star Wars Twitter account about COVID-19.

However, the #FireGinaCarano hashtag has actually been around for months. It seemed to have originated when Gina Carano refused to list her pronouns in her bio at the request (more like demands) of Twitter.

Carano eventually grew tired of the Twitter outrage mob, and posted her pronouns as “Beep / Bop / Boop,” which some took as a possible nod to the NPC meme.

From then on, things snowballed. Twitter users began watching everything Carano posted or liked. And some of what she posted and liked had a conservative political bent. That’s a cardinal sin on Twitter, which might be the most left-leaning social media platform.

Nearly every post from the Star Wars Twitter account from then on was met with a barrage of calls to fire Gina Carano, including one defending The High Republic Show host Krystina Arielle.

Carano herself seemed pretty blindsided by all the ruckus over her opinions. As the country becomes more and more politically polarized, social media is playing an ever increasing role in silencing dissenting opinions.

This has led to an mass exodus of conservatives from sites like Twitter and Facebook, and also the controversial shutdown of conservative leaning alternative platforms like Parler.

Gina Carano told The Federalist she speaks up because there’s a large group of people who have no voice on social media and in Hollywood.

“The whole reason I started speaking out is because I feel like there is a large group of people that were being silenced this year and being forced to play this game of wokeism or whatever it is. No matter who you voted for, no matter who you are, I want to create a platform where everybody can have an opportunity. Everybody.”

Everything has seemingly become a political battleground, even pastimes like movies and video games, and no one asked for it.

#FireGinaCarano vs. #WeLoveCaraDune

With Carano’s job on The Mandalorian seemingly on the line, the situation reached a boiling point on Twitter yesterday. Many fans took to Twitter to show support for Carano with the #WeLoveCaraDune hashtag.

Gina Carano thanked fans herself via video.

But again, an equal an opposite reaction. #FireGinaCarano began trending again as pushback against the Cara Dune hashtag.

Regardless of how you feel about Gina Carano, she’s possibly become almost as big as Baby Yoda on social media. According to Google Trends, “Gina Carano” is a highly searched term in relation to Star Wars. In fact, it’s trending far above “The High Republic.”

People at Lucasfilm have certainly noticed that, anyway.

Could Lucasfilm and Disney still decide Carano is too much trouble and fire her off The Mandalorian for political “wrongthink?”

Absolutely.

But the backlash would be severe. And at a time when Star Wars is still on probation with many fans, changing up the formula of The Mandalorian — the only bright spot Disney Star Wars has going for it — would probably be an unwise business decision.

But hey, they also thought destroying the character of Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi was a good idea, so who knows?
