Food Review: Black Velvet Whoopie Pie at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party 2023

Upon arriving at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, I knew exactly what I wanted: the Black Velvet Whoopie Pie. It’s hard to come across these sorts of pies that aren’t mass-produced. Aside from a few local markets, I rarely see them offered elsewhere. So, did Disney’s version deliver what I was expecting?

The Black Velvet Whoopie Pie is not full of thrills, but it is full of chills … because the dessert is refrigerated. As someone who has purchased an ungodly number of whoopie pies at the Ahmish market, I know these things should not be chilled.

The Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party version sandwiches a buttercream filling, unlike the standard pie with the fluffy whipped filling. If you’ve ever put a buttercream cake in the fridge, you know that the frosting gets hard and changes the taste a bit.

This isn’t to say that the treat is unappetizing, but it would have been so much better if it had been stored outside of cold storage. The black velvet “cookie” is more of a cake, which is totally normal for a whoopie pie. It’s sticky and primarily soft until you get closer to the buttercream. Then, it gets as hard as a brick.

I should have gotten this before leaving to see if it would be better once the treat reached room temperature. A Black Velvet Whoopie Pie was one of the two things I was super excited about at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, and it failed to deliver primarily because of how it was served.

As the buttercream filling was dry, I needed something to wash it down. So, why not try he surprise slushy that was advertised next to the Black Velvet Whoopie Pie?

I’ve not had Fanta in several years, possibly decades. I was unaware that the company’s new Halloween mystery flavor was offered at the Magic Kingdom during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Still, there it was, at Liberty Square Market.

In September, Coca-Cola announced the Fanta Zero Sugar Halloween mystery flavor. Dyed a very dark blue/green, it fits in with the seasonal celebration, but what is it supposed to taste like?

There’s the expected citrus, but not in the tangy way. It reminded me of blood oranges, my favorite version of the fruit. It makes sense since there aren’t too many fruits with names that can play easily into Halloween.

Would I get either of these again? No. Mainly because of the dye. It has nothing to do with the taste but because of what that type of dark coloring does to your digestive system the next day. I feel sorry for the maids who had to clean the bathroom after I checked out…
