Florida Legislators Threaten To Repeal Disney’s Reedy Creek District

A brand new threat to Disney’s operations in Florida has reared its ugly head as a number of Florida legislators and officials, including State Governor Ron DeSantis, threaten to repeal Disney’s Reedy Creek Improvement District.

The reasoning behind the potential repeal is due to the ongoing battle between Disney’s policies and the current Florida State Government. When Disney began opposing the Parental Rights In Education Bill that was just recently signed into law, DeSantis made it clear that they had “crossed the line”.

DeSantis is now saying he would be “receptive” to changes to the 1967 Reedy Creek Improvement Act:

As the governor, I could be presented with changes to that. And I think I’ve said I’d be receptive to that. But ultimately, the Legislature would have to move forward. So I know that there’s a lot of discussion about that. And we’ll just see how that shakes out.

For those who are unaware, Reedy Creek is a self governing jurisdiction for the land owned by the Walt Disney World Resort located in between the Orange and Osceola counties. Within the district are two cities, Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista.

The district was originally conceived by Walt Disney in the 1960s as a way to protect the land from the type of outside interference he saw outside of Disneyland in California. Though this concept was for when EPCOT was planned to be a living community.

Within this district Disney and other landowners within the district are responsible for the law enforcement, fire department, electricity and medical services instead of through Florida taxpayer dollars.

With the recent controversies that the company is facing, Disney appears to be fighting a losing battle in Florida. According to The Orlando Sentinel, DeSantis expressed his support of removing Disney’s “special privileges”. In response to Disney’s goal of repealing the Parental Rights in Education Act DeSantis said: “They do not run this state. They do not control this state.

DeSantis also feels that no company should be given special privileges:

“I don’t support special privileges in law, just because a company is powerful, and they’ve been able to wield a lot of power.

If the Reedy Creek Improvement District is indeed repealed by Florida legislators then the ways that Disney operates in the state of Florida will forever be altered going forward. No longer able to call all the shots within their property lines without worry. Though it is too early to call at this point.
