Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness Hits $185 Million Opening Weekend

Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness opened this past weekend and it came out swinging with a $185 million domestic opening and a global opening of$450 million. This is without the Chinese box office.

Overall this was the 11th best domestic premiere and it was in the top seven MCU debut. People speculate that the movie drew in a larger crowd because some theaters were debuting a trailer for the second Avatar film Avatar: The Way of Water.

Personally, I think a lot of it had to do with the popularity of Spider-Man: No Way Home that set up the multiverse and people wanted to see how it tied in (it didn’t very much.) I also think that the rumored cameos of fan favorite characters also attracted viewers.

Moving forward we will likely still see bigger crowds for Thor Love and Thunder and Black Panther 2 but as we start getting into newer characters that people haven’t been following for three phases of the MCU, that might drop off.

Currently on Rotten Tomatoes the second Doctor Strange film is sitting at a 75% Critical Score and 87% Audience Score. I am curious to see how the numbers change as more and more people see the film. I do think it should be noted that this film is a hard PG-13. It pushes the limits of that rating for sure so if you have kids you may want to look into it more before you take them.
