Disney received a plethora of Academy Award nominations this week.  The announcement of the nominees for the 94th Academy Awards took place on February 8th, 2022, and they were presented by Leslie Jordan and Tracee Ellis Ross.  The Oscar is the highest award you can receive in the film industry.  Netflix’s The Power of the Dog starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Marvel’s Dr. Strange, leads the pack with twelve total nominations.

Breaking down the Disney nominees:

West Side Story was nominated for seven Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director for Steven Spielberg, Best Supporting Actress for Ariana DeBose (Anita), Best Costume Design, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, and Best Production Design.  Ariana DeBose is a heavy favorite to win the Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal as Anita, the same role that Rita Moreno won an Oscar for in 1962.

Cruella was nominated for two Oscars including Best Costume Design and Best Make-up and Hairstyling.
Encanto was nominated for three Oscars for Best Animated Feature Film, Best Score for Germaine Franco, and Best Original Song for “Dos Oruguitas” by Lin-Manuel Miranda.  If Miranda wins, he will officially be known as an EGOT winner having won all of the major awards in the industry – an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony.

Luca was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film.

Raya and the Last Dragon was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film.

Spider-man: No Way Home was nominated for an Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
