Even though Walt Disney World is closed to the public, the excitement hasn’t stopped for the Animal Kingdom. They have had two new babies born recently! One is a baby prehensile-tailed porcupine and one is a Hartmann’s Zebra foal.
The baby porcupine, called a “porcupette”, was born to Peri, famous for being featured in One Day at Disney on Disney+, on Feb. 25.
“Cast members like Walt Disney World Veterinarian Dr. Natalie provide continual care for Peri – from annual exams, to pregnancy check-ups, the birth of her porcupette, and of course, post-partum care.”
Baby porcupines, porcupettes, have fine red fur, with their tiny quills underneath. Those quills begin to harden hours after they’re born, otherwise mom would have had a lot more trouble.
Because Prehnsile-tailed porcupines have internal sex organs, the veterinary team had to send some quills for DNA testing to determine that the new bay is a girl.
But Disney got another baby girl just last week when they welcomed a new Hartmann’s Zebra foal last Saturday, March 21st. She was born to first-time-mom, Heidi the zebra.
Here’s a video about the new foal:
Both babies were born as part of the Species Survival Plan (SSP) Program. This program is overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA.) Their purpose is to “ensure responsible breeding and genetic diversity of thousands of species of animals.”
