So this is a surprise. It has been announced that Disney Springs will begin a “phased reopening” starting on May 20th.

Here’s what Disney has said:

A phased reopening of Disney Springs will begin on May 20. Following the guidance of government and health officials, a limited number of shopping and dining experiences that are owned by third-party operating participants will begin to open during this initial phase. The rest of Walt Disney World Resort will remain closed, including theme parks and resort hotels.

Disney will begin to reopen a limited number of “shopping and dining experiences that are owned by third-party operating participants will begin to open during this initial phase.”

That’s interesting let them take the risk during the early phase. It’s also interesting that this was announced when there were rumors of City Walk at Universal Studios on May 11th.

Disney continued:

As we continue to monitor conditions, and with the health of guests and Disney cast members at the forefront of our planning, we are making several operational changes. Disney Springs will begin to reopen in a way that incorporates enhanced safety measures, including increased cleaning procedures, the use of appropriate face coverings by both cast members and guests, limited-contact guest services and additional safety training for cast members.

When they begin to reopen  they will require cast members and guests to wear masks, offer limited-contact guest services and initiate “increased cleaning procedures.”  There will also be limited capacity, parking and operating hours that have yet to be announced and will be released, along with “additional protocols and procedures” before May 20th.

It is good news that we are seeing some movement towards reopening, but remember that they reopened the shopping area of Shanghai Disneyland several weeks prior to the reopening of the parks. So it’s good news for sure, but temper your expectations in case it still takes awhile for the parks to open.
