Disney Rebooting ‘Home Alone’ and Re-making Other Fox Franchises for Disney+

This might be an unpopular post but I have to say something here. Why the heck does Disney keep rebooting everything? Disney has always been known for innovation and amazing new IPs and now they seem to be focusing most of their attention on rebooting everything.

What are they rebooting?

Disney has announced it will be rebooting the Fox properties: Home Alone, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Night at the Museum, and Cheaper by the Dozen for the Disney+ streaming service.

I can see Home Alone and Cheaper by the Dozen. Both could be rebooted as it’s been awhile since those movies were out and Home Alone has had new kids a few times already. But Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Night at the Museum are too new for this. They did do another Diary of a Wimpy Kid film with new people and it did not do well.

Since Disney reported that their profits are down due to the new streaming service and the huge loss they took on X-men: Dark Phoenix, they need to recoup money quickly. Which likely means higher prices at the parks and a bunch of content created for Disney+ as quickly and inexpensively as possible. I’m starting to be reminded of the days with Eisner where so much was pushed out for direct-to-video or slapped together cartoon shows based off of their popular IP.  That isn’t a good thing.

My thoughts:

Maybe I’m disappointed because I expect more from a company like Disney. You always knew if they were putting something out it was probably going to be incredible! They had their animated features and games like Disney Infinity and amazing new shows or parades in the parks. Now it’s just constant IP and it feels more like we are dollar signs and less like we are “valued customers.”

Of course this is all my opinion as a life-long Disney fan and share holder, and others might feel differently. That’s completely fair and fine. This blog is about balance and not just hair flipping and saying everything is “magical,” even when it’s not.  Honesty and negativity aren’t the same things and some people just equate the two. When you can’t be honest improvement won’t happen.

I really hope Disney can find their groove again. When they hit it they knock it out of the park and across the parking lot. So I’m hoping they can find that innovative muse again, but I also hope I can still afford it when they do.
