RUMOR: DuckTales Has Been Cancelled by Disney XD, Season 3 Said to Be the Last

Disney’s DuckTales reboot is rumored to have been quietly cancelled, according to Collider associate editor Drew Taylor on Twitter. It’s being said that Season 3 will be the end of the line for Uncle Scrooge McDuck and family, and that there will be no Season 4 of DuckTales.

When pressed as to how he knew DuckTales season 3 would be the end of the series, Taylor said most of the crew have already moved on to new projects.

Could he possibly be talking about the Darkwing Duck reboot? According to Deadline, that series is to be headed up by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. It’s unclear at this point if it’s a spinoff of the current DuckTales series, or if it is own thing entirely.

However, Darkwing Duck has made a few appearances in the 2017 DuckTales series.

DuckTales Producer Frank Angones is silent on the topic of DuckTales’ rumored demise, and is instead promoting a charity auction.

When directly asked by fans as to whether or not there would be a Season 4 of DuckTales, Angones remains quiet. If the series is indeed wrapped up, it’s likely that a Disney NDA prevents him from disclosing that right now.

Earlier this year, Angones did confirm that DuckTales was on a “hiatus” due to the pandemic.

Disney is severely cash strapped right now, and despite animation being a key focus for other streaming services during the pandemic, it doesn’t appear to be a major focus for Disney+. DuckTales is an incredibly expensive show to produce, and it might have been a casualty of The Mouse House’s dwindling fortunes.

WDW News Today speculates that the show’s cancellation might lead to a cancellation of the new World Showcase adventure in EPCOT, but nothing has been confirmed just yet.

DuckTales was rebooted in 2017 on Disney XD and has been critically acclaimed by animation fans. The original series (1987-1990) helped kick off The Disney Afternoon syndicated animation block in 1990. Both are based (loosely) on the beloved Duck family comics by Carl Barks.
