Recently it was announced that some fan favorite films from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise will be making their way onto Disney Plus. The films in question include 2019’s Deadpool, it’s 2018 sequel Deadpool 2 and the 2017 solo Wolverine film Logan. Though not directly connected to the X-Men series continuity they are still highly regarded and have their respective fandoms.Â
Well it appears that this news not only has fans excited, but has also ruffled the feathers of the Parents Television Council (PTC) for allowing R-Rated films with gore, swearing, use of alcohol/tobacco and strong sexual themes/nudity.
The PTC President, Tim Winter, made the following statement after the announcement:
“Three years ago, the Walt Disney Company made a promise to families: No R-rated movies on Disney+, they said. It’s a family-focused platform, they said. We have Hulu for our edgier adult fare, they said. It turns out they were lying to us,” Winter said in a press release Friday. “After decades of corporate brilliance establishing itself as the world’s most trusted brand for families, today’s C-level suite at Disney has decided to flush it all down the toilet.“
If you recall this wasn’t the first time that Marvel related caused an uproar from the PTC. Earlier this year in March the Netflix Marvel shows (Daredevil, Punisher, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Defenders) were added to Disney Plus. These shows were far more graphic in terms of content in contrast to their MCU counterparts. As a result the PTC were outraged and voiced their concerns.
With Disney owning most of Hulu (and potentially all of it in the near future) perhaps it might have been better to release those films on there instead of the family marketed service. It would be like having Mortal Kombat gameplay videos on YouTube kids.
What do you think of this most recent backlash?
