Daybreak Games’ Marvel Themed MMO Has Officially Been Canceled

Sad news for all of those who were looking forward to playing the Marvel themed MMO being developed by Daybreak Games. The studios announced that the project, which was announced last fall, has been canceled.

The studio’s parent company, Enad Global 7, had announced that they planned to redistribute the development to other projects as the investment in the Marvel MMO was seen as too risky:

EG7 today announced it will be discontinuing the development of the Marvel project at Daybreak Games. Based on the re-evaluation of the development risk profile, size of investment, and the long-term product portfolio strategy for the group, the board has decided to change the development priorities and reallocate resources within the group to focus on alternative long-term projects. The company had planned to invest more than SEK 500 million in the Marvel project over the next three years. The company will now diversify this investment across multiple, smaller size projects within the group, including the previously announced major upgrades to The Lord of the Rings Online and DC Universe Online, and new game opportunities with our first party, original IPs. Along with this reallocation, the company expects a write down of approximately SEK 230 million in project related assets in Q2 2022. As one of the long-term investments, the change to the Marvel project plan will not impact near to medium term revenues and profits other than the balance sheet and P&L impact related to the write-down.

Daybreak Games, formally SONY Online Entertainment or SOE, is one of the longest running MMO developers. They are the same team responsible for the popular EverQuest series of games, one of the first popular MMOs.

They also developed DC Universe Online, Planetside, Star Wars Galaxies, Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons & Dragons Online.

The Marvel project was being headed up by Jack Emmert, one of the creators of the City of Heroes MMO. It is unfortunate that we won’t get to see their take on the Marvel Universe.

Funny enough this isn’t the first time a Marvel MMO was canceled. Marvel Universe Online was being developed by Cryptic Studios.

But the project was scrapped reworked into Champions Online due to legal issues.

Are you disappointed in the game’s cancelation?
