Could Walt Disney World Shut Down Again Under Biden Presidency?

One of Joe Biden’s Covid advisors says that the U.S. should down for another 4 to 6 weeks to get the spread under and control and revive the economy, according to CNBC.

This sounds similar to the second lockdowns we’re seeing in Europe, including the one that shuttered Disneyland Paris again. Given that Covid cases are on the rise in the U.S. once again, it’s at least plausible that Biden would consider a nationwide lockdown stateside should he be finalized as president-elect.

Dr. Michael Osterholm is a coronavirus advisor to Joe Biden, and claims the country is headed toward “Covid hell.”

Here’s more from CNBC…

A nationwide lockdown would drive the number of new cases and hospitalizations down to manageable levels while the world awaits a vaccine, [Osterholm] told Yahoo Finance on Wednesday.

“We could pay for a package right now to cover all of the wages, lost wages for individual workers, for losses to small companies, to medium-sized companies or city, state, county governments. We could do all of that,” he said. “If we did that, then we could lock down for four to six weeks.”

“My only point was if we are going to keep making restrictions state-by-state, there is no compensation for the businesses that are being impacted,” he added. “What we’re doing right now is not working.”

CNBC reached out to Biden’s team, and they stated that it was not currently in line with his thinking. However, given how much the situation with Covid changes from week to week, anything is possible at this point.

Remember, Disneyland was only supposed to close for about two weeks. Eight months later, there is still no reopening date in sight, much to the dismay of Disney execs and many California mayors.

Another Walt Disney World Shutdown Could Lead to Massive Losses for the Company and More Layoffs

With Walt Disney World pulling nearly all of the weight for Disney’s travel business, another shutdown could be absolutely catastrophic for the company, which posted heavy losses this year and recently laid off 28,000 workers.

Again, it’s all speculation at this point. But Biden is apparently taking advice on dealing with Covid like San Francisco has, which could mean aggressive lockdowns. The curve has been flattened, but so have many businesses.

So it’s clear that Democratic President Joe Biden will probably deal with Covid very differently than Republican Governor Ron DeSantis and Republican President Donald Trump has.

A Covid vaccine is on the way… but how long until it is widely available?

The bright spot in all of this, however, is word that a Covid vaccine is on the horizon. This will come as welcome relief to those working in the travel industry, but it’s still many months away.

Whatever may happen, Disney, Disney employees and Disney fans should be prepared. It may be a very long winter.
