Breaking- San Diego Comic-Con International 2020 Has Been Cancelled

Sadly I have to report that this years’s Comic-Con International, aka SDCC has been cancelled. We just received an e-mail about the situation.

The message states:

For the first time in its 50-year history San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC), the organizers behind the annual pop culture celebration, announced today with deep regret, that there will be no Comic-Con in 2020,” Comic-Con said in a statement. “The event will instead return to the San Diego Convention Center from July 22-25, 2021. Recognizing that countless attendees save and plan for its conventions each year, and how many exhibitors and stakeholders rely upon its events for a major portion of their livelihood, they had hoped to delay this decision in anticipation that COVID-19 concerns might lessen by summer. Continuous monitoring of health advisories and recent statements by the Governor of California have made it clear that it would not be safe to move forward with plans for this year.

For the first time in 50 years the San Diego Comic-Con has been cancelled to to the Coronavirus pandemic. The Comic-Con Museum will be working on “new and creative digital ways to bring the magic of Comic-Con to you all year round” starting in 2021.

So does this mean that 2021 will see SDCC or will it be digital next year?

SDCC was originally planned for July 23-26, 2020.

This is a big hit to the pop culture community since most studios use the event as a major promotional opportunity, including Disney and Marvel.  Last year Marvel even announced their upcoming Phase 4 slate at the event.

It’s also the place to find previews of upcoming films and toys, exclusive merchandise, and celebrity panels. Often bringing in celebrities and crew from Disney IP for presentations.

As someone who comes from comics and a pop-culture background, I can’t stress the blow to pop culture this is.

We will keep you posted with information as it becomes available.
