Banana Cream Pie Doughnut from Voodoo Doughnut

Voodoo Doughnut, in CityWalk Orlando, displays incredible creativity in terms of seasonal selections. Since their relationship with Universal Orlando started, they design excellent themed doughnuts for different events at Universal Orlando. For Mardi Gras 2022, Voodoo Doughnut offers the Banana Cream Pie Doughnut as the Mardi Gras specialty doughnut.

The menu description reads “a yeast shell filled with banana custard dipped in vanilla icing, sprinkled with cinnamon and a touch of Nilla wafer on top.” This doughnut costs $3.75. That price falls in the high range for this doughnut shop.

So how did Voodoo Doughnut do with this one? First impressions failed to reach normal Voodoo standards. As many people commented, this looks like a fried egg. The appearance lacks quality to beckon guests to expect enjoyment.

In addition, the doughnut creates a problem cutting it. Often guests will share a specialty doughnut here thus the need to cut them. The Nilla wafer on top creating the “egg” look falls right in ideal spot to cut. I tried to cut it with the wafer there. I failed. The wafer with icing tasted fine though. However, I do not think the wafer itself accomplished the banana pudding imagery they were desiring.

Voodoo Doughnut does lots of things with their filled doughnuts. Some filled creations are heavenly. Yet, some fail to measure up. I, and others, found the banana custard to be disappointing. For example, as Xavier of Universal Food Blog said to me: “It tastes like laffy taffy.” Now, if you love that style of candy, this doughnut might excite you. As you can tell, I prefer other doughnut fillings. The cream creates more potential mess than the usual filled doughnuts here.

The yeast doughnut working as a shell tasted great. I prefer yeast style doughnuts anyway. In fairness, I have eaten far too many doughnuts recently. These ranks low among those. In fact, I selected to not even finish it.

I love the creative specialty doughnuts here. Not every new creation will star in the theatre of doughnuts. This time, Voodoo Doughnuts simply tried too hard to design an incredible creation. At this price point, Voodoo offers many far superior offerings. On your next trip, unless you like taste of creamy banana immensely like a Minion, I suggest ordering something else here.

Once again, eat like you mean it!
