With James Cameron and Disney/20th Century Studios set to release the long awaited sequel to the highest grossing film of all time, more and more excitement has been building. Besides the multiple recent video game announcements, the Pandora section at Animal Kingdom has also been bringing in plenty of guests buying merchandise and immersing themselves in the far away world with multiple rides and set pieces. But not all Avatar News is good news, as a major competitor is set to release the same day, and it is also a sequel to a very successful film.
'AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM' & 'AVATAR 2' are scheduled to both release on December 16, 2022. Will you be watching both?

Warner Bros. and DC Comics are set to release the sequel to the 2018 super hero action movie Aquaman, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Jason Mamoa was credited with bringing new life to the character, bringing in $1.1 Billion at the Box Office, and is set to return, along with the controversial Amber Heard, to save the world’s oceans on December 16th. Which also happens to be the exact same day Disney/20th Century Studios plans to release Avatar 2.
Thanks to a list from Discussing Films showing off all the films that will be releasing in 2022, we can see that when you scroll down to December you’ll see both films are set to release the same day. This caused discussion on Twitter with some users saying they would rather see Avatar 2 over the Aquaman Sequel due to Heard’s involvement, but the first film did relatively well overseas so it may not impact the film’s box office intake since many overseas don’t pay attention to Hollywood drama.
With these two highly anticipated sequels going head-to-head this year’s Christmas Season it is unknown which one may come out on top to how it may affects other films, especially with Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. film releasing just a week later.
Which one will you see? Or do you plan on seeing both?
