Attack of the Killer Onions with the Choripan at Universal Orlando Mardi Gras 2022

Universal Orlando followed pattern from last year’s Mardi Gras food set-up. They covered the sign of Woody Woodpecker’s Pizza Company in KidZone area to attempt to fool us into visiting this spot for Mardi Gras food.  Last year, we ate Canadian themed food here. Universal Orlando veterans know this area sells “Pizza Fries” during Halloween Horror Nights. In fact, recently one of the menu items at this food location converted to being called “Pizza Fries. For record, I understand those have improved but still have way too much onion and tomato slaw but more about that in a moment.

On this venture, I ordered the Choripan. This hot dog style food item emerged here from its former place during the winter holiday at the food truck in front of Monster’s Café. The “Choripan with French Fries” costs guests $11.49 before discounts. The official menu description reads grilled chorizo, garlic mayo, chimichurri, tomato and onion curtido on a split-top roll. The holiday version sold well.

In my opinion, this food choice offers several solid positives. However, it suffers from one large negative. This negative can be found in many Mardi Gras food items this year. Though it goes by various names, I will call it tomato and onion slaw. For this sausage roll, the Universal chefs use a clever themed name for it known as curtido.

What is curtido you ask?

For transparency, I lacked this knowledge until writing this review. Curtido is a type of South American slaw or salad. This slaw/salad tastes the same as it did on several other Mardi Gras food items this year. The onion flavor overwhelms the dishes. After the first week of Mardi Gras, the chefs seem to have scaled that onion overload back some but expect it if you get a dish with onion in the description.

Now, back to our regular scheduled food review…The bread on this sausage roll tastes buttery. Also, the bread possesses crispiness on the outside and softness on inside. Bravo, Universal!

The chorizo combined with other ingredients shines with flavor. As you might expect, reading my food reviews from Mardi Gras, you should include all the ingredients in each bite. Also, garlic mayo adds flavor without overpowering everything.

Overall, this food item provides a safe choice. I prefer my chorizo to possess more flavor and spice, however. The portion size rates adequate. If you can slide off some of the onions, this sausage roll provides a solid dining experience. However, the fries rank as average theme park fries. If you select to enjoy this menu item, enjoy your time in the KidZone area. As always, eat like you mean it!
