Recently when chatting with my friend, we debated the definition of a “fritter.” The prompt for this conversation involved the “Apple Fritter.” My friend had gotten the apple fritter a few times from Lard Lad’s Donuts in Springfield, USA area of Universal Studios Florida. That fritter looks like what I imagine a fritter to look like. Later that same day, he bought the apple fritter from Voodoo Doughnut in Universal Orlando CityWalk. This fritter appeared different than I expected. In fairness, I have seen this type “fritter” many times before. My brain failed to process it as a fritter. Truly, the most attractive fritter I have ever seen.

What do I say about this sweet fritter and its appearance? Well, a standard dictionary style definition for fritter is a small mass of fried or sautéed batter often containing fruit or meat. These masses of fried batter generally look very asymmetrical. The Voodoo version looks asymmetrical than most fritters.

The Voodoo Doughnut “Apple Fritter” costs $3.75. Voodoo Doughnut describes this fritter as a fried dough doughnut with apple chunks and cinnamon covered in glaze.

So, what did I think about this apple fritter? The flavor of this fritter exceeded my expectations. Other people I consulted with said the same thing. This tasted like a solid doughnut with apple cinnamon flavoring. I show personal preference to cinnamon rolls, so this fits my taste well. In fairness, I heard some negative things about this fritter before trying it. Most complaints regarding apple flavor quality.

I thought the standard glaze on the outside of fritter worked fine but nothing special. However, at least for the two different fritters, ordered on different days of same week, the quantity of solid flavor on the inside shines with the Voodoo version. The apple flavor provides perfect balance. The texture within the fritter added to the enjoyment. The fritter felt light, and the taste matched that. Perhaps, the apple content could be higher. Yet, I found the texture and feel excellent.

Now, I still doubt this “fritter” counts as a true fritter. However, if you want apple cinnamon flavored doughnut, then this will meet your needs. As always, eat like you mean it!
