How The Alvin And The Chipmunks Sale Could Affect Disney

Alvin and the Chipmunks is one of the most well known cartoon character bands in existence. These three brothers were selling records ever since 1958, long before other cartoon acts like Josie and the Pussycats, Jem and the Holograms, Gorillaz or Savlonic came on the scene.

They are most well known for their song “Christmas Time Is Here” that plays every Christmas season to the delight of children and the annoyance of adults.

20th Century Fox was one of the studios that looked back at older IPs and decided to remake them for modern audiences, similar to how Sony made a few Smurfs film and Warner Bros did a handful of Scooby Doo films. The 2007 live-action film Alvin and The Chipmunks was a smash hit, and had a total of three sequels. All featured high-pitched sped up covers of then recent pop songs.

When Disney bought 20th Century Fox in 2019 they probably thought that they could keep the film rights, like what they are doing with Diary of a Wimpy Kid. But the current IP holder, Bagdasarian Productions, reportedly plans to sell the Alvin and the Chipmunks IP off for an estimated $300 Million.

I may have liked them as a kid, but they’re definitely not worth that much in my opinion. However, the sale of this IP could prevent Disney from creating any more films or even shows based on the trio of singers. And with Bob Chapek known for trying to spend as little money as possible Disney most likely won’t spend that much on a nearly 65-year-old intellectual property.

If someone does buy the rights for that price it is unknown if Disney would be willing to play ball with the new IP holder to produce more from the Chipmunks. Maybe they should just stick to Chip and Dale.
