Could the much anticipated second attraction in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge be in trouble? And could those rumors lead to the Rise of the Resistance opening date being pushed back or even some cuts to the budget?
That’s the rumor, according to alleged Disney insiders on the WDW Magic forums.
According to insiders, Disney is in full freak out mode over troubles with the attraction, which is set to open in December in Orlando and January in Anaheim.
Here’s the post that started a very, very long thread…
Latest word I have from a few days ago is that TDO [Team Disney Orlando] is now expecting to have to announce a delay for the opening, but they’re holding off on the announcement so as to not damage potential holiday resort bookings. Things continue to go poorly at both construction sites, the budget continues to balloon beyond requirements, and TDA [Team Disney Anaheim ] is frankly in freak-out mode because September attendance is continuing to be abysmal even with APs [Annual Passports] unlocked. DHS [Disney’s Hollywood Studios] data is beginning to settle in, and MFSR [Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run] is regularly being outperformed in riders and queue times by Slinky Dog AND RnRC [Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster] after 1:00 pm.
The word is that the WiFi could be part of the issue, as has been inclement weather that might have potentially damaged some construction.
Should the ride not open in December as planned, this might upset quite a few vacationers who pushed their travel plans back to experience Galaxy’s Edge when it was complete.
The thread goes on for pages, and of course tends to argue both for and against Galaxy’s Edge on top of talking about a potential delay.
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge can’t really afford another black eye. After the DLR version of the land was called a “flop” by many media outlets, and many people commenting on how unusually light the bookings are at Walt Disney World for this time of year, opening Rise of the Resistance late would be yet another disaster that the media would pounce on.
But hey, maybe Disney needs to hear it. Many longtime Disney Parks fans seem to agree that Disney is becoming more and more tone deaf to what fans want and expect… and are willing to pay top dollar for.
Again, this is all rumor and speculation, but the WDW Magic forums do tend to generate some pretty credible insider information, as imagineers and others close to Disney frequent them.
Stay tuned for more information as we hear it. For now, just assume that Rise of the Resistance will open as planned.
